My mother-in-law purchased a portable air conditioner for her house in Long Beach, CA. She found out that she needed additional electric lines. So, she called USA Repairs Inc.. She was told that needed a new breaker box and her wiring was black and was a fire hazard. They quoted her a price of $4000 and while we thought that was high we advised her to accept it to prevent her house from burning down. Recently, she needed her ice maker in her new refrigerator hooked up to a water line and that the handle on her toilet was broken. She,again, called USA Repairs Inc. They quoted her a price of $350 to repair the toilet and $1800 to hook up the ice maker. Luckily, we were on Skype with her at the time and asked the tech why it was going to cost so much when new toilet handles were cheap. He told us that it was an old toilet and it took special parts and he offered a lifetime warranty. We told him to go on his way we were not interested letting her get ripped off(again). As, we were going to be out here(From Ft. Worth, TX) in 6 weeks(10-10-11) and I could do the work for her(even though I have never done any of this before). When we arrived I went down to Home Depot and purchased the parts for both projects (including the most expensive toilet handle they had for $15) for $40. The toilet took about 15 minutes and the water line to the refrigerator took about an hour. We feel that this is a case of a company preying on older people(she is 70) and ripping them off with a callous disregard to her finances. While there is nothing wrong with a company making a profit. We feel that $200 would be a fair price for these repairs. I would advise anyone to steer clear of this predatory company.
