My auto insurance policy lapsed recently and my insurance company couldn't reinstate my policy, so it would take over a week to get insurance through them. I wanted to get insurance same day so I would be covered until I could get my old plan back up & running. LA West got my info via a referral website & called me. The agent was very nice & seemed knowledgeable. I reiterated the fact that I was looking for the cheapest option possible & that I intended to go back to my insurance company after a month or two. She said it was no problem & found a plan that was in my budget. I asked her if she was sure that there were no other fees, and that I could cancel my insurance policy after such a short time. She guaranteed me that there were no extra fees or set-up fees and canceling would not be a problem. I gave her my credit card number & she said I had to e-sign a document so they could activate my policy. I received the contract in my email and it stipulated that in signing it, I would be signing over power of attorney & would pay a $150 brokers fee! Perhaps the power of attorney thing is standard when going through a broker (although I don't see why), but I was never made aware of the brokers fee. I can only assume the agent was hoping I would hastily sign the document & be bound to it. I called the company back to tell them no way & to refund my credit card which they had already charged. (before I had even signed anything!)I know brokers need to get paid, but I figured they got a commission from the insurance companies. I wonder how many people have been duped into signing & being bound to a contract they didn't want to be in. I feel the tactics of this agent were very deceptive.
