Nice dentist office, horrible customer service and billing i would not recommend

I took my children to Dr. Chen for their check-up and cleaning for the first time about a year ago. Everything seemed fine. A few weeks after the second visit (approximately six months after the first visit) her office informed us that our insurance only covers fluoride treatment once a year and that we owed for the treatment performed on the second visit. I explained that no one mentioned this to me prior to the treatment being done and that I do not pay for things that are not approved prior to being performed. Her office manager said that it was their policy to do the fluoride treatment every visit and that it was my responsibility to know their policy. I said that it was our second visit and asked how am I supposed to know their policy? I said that I only want it when the insurance pays for it. He then said that he would waive the charges and that he would refer me to another dentist because their policy is that they do it every time regardless of what the patient wants. He went on to say that they, Dr. Suelene’s dental office, are just a middle man between me and my insurance. I corrected him and said that my contract for dental care is between me and Dr. Suelene’s office (legally called privity of contract) and that contractually speaking, before I can be charged for a service there must be a verbal or written agreement for that service. I never went to a Doctor’s office where they were the dictator. I thought that I had a choice with my and my children’s dental care…of course I do, we will not be going back.
