Dr. Dornan examined both upper sides of my mouth and said that I should have GEM 21S implanted due to bone loss in these areas. The surgery was performed on 11/7/07, but the GEM 21 was not added. After the surgery, Dr. Dornan mentioned that, after cutting into the gums, it was found that I was a poor candidate for this procedure and that GEM 21S was not applied. I asked why and the response was that “there was nothing to attach it to”. I repeatedly asked why this was the case but I was repeatedly stonewalled..
I tried to find out if::
1) Application of GEM 21 could not be applied due to conditions at that time only, or
2) My condition precludes the use of GEM 21 (or possibly any other method of bone augmentation) “forever” due to the conditions stated by Dr. Dornan.
3) Follow-up treatment is still needed to resolve the above conditions
I went to a number of periodontists and dentists for advice regarding this matter. None of them said GEM 21 was warranted. They also said that they could not understand what was meant by “there was nothing to hook it to.” The impression that I received from the consultations is that surgery did not need to be done by Dr. Dornan. As a result, I sought advice from the Orange County Dental Society in November, 2008 and, a short time later, the California Dental Association (CDA). A separate complaint about the California Dental Association will be written following this review.
To make a very long story short,people should know how Dr. Dornan refused to answer these questions for what is now well over two years, did not warn me of the likelihood of wasting $2,000 for what seems to be a speculative operation, and charged me the full amount anyway. The other dental professionals I contacted stated they would have warned me of the uncertainty and would have cut their fee by 1/3 to 1/2, since time was not spend on actual bone grafting. In addition, the inability of the dental “peer review” systems to have these three questions answered during the last 12 months are evidence that they are also a waste of time.
