Holidays & Resorts, scam or not?
|
1/24/2011 10:54 PM (PST)
Has anyone dealt with Holidays & Resorts of Lawrenceville, GA.? They called to say that they have a buyer for my timeshare. Gave a price and asked if we would accept the offer. Called us back after 2 hours after they checked the buyers credit. Buyer supposed gave them 20% which we would get whether they backed out or not. I just would like to know if anyone has ever had any experiences with them. Thanks

We received a call from them as well--I am very hesitant because of other companies we have worked with--this sounds like a win-win, but I am wondering what their catch is? My husband really wants to sell our timeshare and I would be willing if we actually were paid what they are offering us . . .

Jen, I have had several conversations with them because we are anxious as well, we want to believe they are legit. I asked why they need money up front from us when the costs should be incurred by the buyer not the seller. They need to know if the title is free and clear and cannot use the buyers money to find out because if it is not clear they would have to refund the 20% down to the buyer. I know that the title is free and clear but they can't take our word for it. The costs we are paying for up front are supposed to come back to us at the closing in addition to the sale price of the timeshare. Will keep you posted.

Well, we just sent in the documents so we will see what happens. I really do not feel very good about it, but my husband said we should try it. The person told me that the company has been around for 8 years--I did a search and did not find much on them plus there was a BBB file opened only in December 2010. I am wondering why this would be if they have been around for 8 years. My other concern is that they are saying the same thing about 20%, but it is not stated anywhere in the papers we signed . . .I am just wondering if they are outright lying. I guess time will tell because we put in our paperwork. I wish there was some way we could take these companies to task--have you listed with anyone else? I personally really like our timeshare, but again, the hubby is bound and determine to get rid of it:(

Through the years we have listed with others, but that is all it was a listing on a website and apparently they did no other marketing. We never heard anything from any of them. Money wasted, but I do know that a new law was passed a year ago January. You can get back any monies that you put out if you do sell your timeshare. I faxed this information to Holidays & Resorts when I faxed the documents back tonite. We are keeping our fingers crossed. We have not used our timeshare at all, our original intention was to use the trading feature when we retired but our interests have changed and we want to travel rather than stay in one place for a week. It seems that the state governments/attorney generals should go after these scam artists but I guess not. I tried to research them also but you can only get so far. good luck... and stay in touch

Hi Jen and Donna! Check out New Scams at the top of Trustlink and click on Selling Your Timeshare. The links at the bottom and the info in the article should be of help to you both. Jody

Same to you, Donna . . .I will post if anything good/bad happens with Holidays & Resorts. I agree that something should be done with the listing companies--they say they have a family interested in the property, but really all they are doing is listing, which in my estimation is a fraud/scam. I personally would just keep our timeshare--the only thing is that my sister has lots of points so we often times just use hers. I also wish the timeshares would make it a bit more exclusive so owners have a stake in keeping their timeshare properties--right now it is too open to everyone else so they "cheapen" the concept. Oh, well, hopefully this is something good, but I am not holding my breath:(
Thanks, Jody, I will take a look

Krista, do a "tag" search on this company and look at previous threads, plus the Timeshare article(s) in the New Scams section at the top of this page. I think you will want to stay away.
Let me guess, they have a ready buyer for your timeshare but need a big fee to cover closing costs or something like that? Click on the New Scams section in the top menu bar here on TrustLink and see the article we have posted on "Selling Your Timeshare: Important Things To Know"
Over the years, there have been a lot of companies that came to life with the promise of helping people sell their timeshares. Most of these companies are located in areas where there are a lot of timeshares, like Florida and California.
Typically, they make a lot of promises about their abilities and claim that there is an army of people dying to purchase timeshares, and all of this will be available to you if you pay them the requested fee.
Reality is completely different. The truth is that timeshares are next to impossible to sell. There's almost no secondary market for timeshares, especially given the current economy and all of the problems in the housing market. Furthermore, if there really was a strong secondary market, these companies wouldn't have to charge a fee, they could make more money charging commissions on sales. The bottom line is that you should not pay any upfront fees to sell your timeshare to somebody else. Check out the Florida AG's website also:

There are legitimate title transfer companies that will actually purchase a timeshare, and the benefit to the timeshare owner is that when closed, it gets them out from under the continuing obligations for common area fees. But the whole industry is hot with scams and fraud.
